On October 29, 2022, at 9:20 am El Paso County Sheriff's Office Deputies with the Northwest Patrol Station were dispatched to Loop 375 east at mile marker 19 in reference to a motor vehicle accident involving a rollover.

Deputies discovered that a car had gone off the side of the road. The driver – identified as Michael Arden Smith – died at the scene.

Deputies were called to the eastbound lanes of Loop 375 where they found a car "off the side of the mountain."
