Eight people killed in pedestrian collision with driver George Alvarez, 34, at bus stop on North Minnesota Avenue in Brownsville, Texas

Brownsville police investigator Martin Sandoval said the crash happened about 8:30 a.m. Sunday at a bus stop near a shelter for migrants in the border city. 

Seven people were killed and up to six were injured Sunday after they were struck by a vehicle while waiting at a city bus stop outside of a migrant shelter in the border city of Brownsville, Texas, police said.

Police are preparing to arrest the hospitalized driver of an SUV that slammed into a crowd, killing eight people waiting for a bus Sunday outside a migrant shelter in the border city of Brownsville, Texas. At least 10 others were injured, authorities said.

During a press conference Monday morning, police said Alvarez has been formally charged with eight counts of manslaughter and 10 counts of aggravated assault with a deadly weapon and he received bonds totalling $3.6 million.

Shelter director Victor Maldonado said the SUV ran up the curb, flipped and continued moving for about 200 feet. Maldonado said that some people walking on the sidewalk about 30 feet from the main group were also hit. Witnesses detained the driver as he tried to run away and held him until police arrived, he said.

Brownsville police say 8 people were killed and many more remain in the hospital.

According to the report, results from Valley Regional Medical Center showed Alvarez tested positive for marijuana, cocaine, and benzodiazepines.
