SUV driver faces manslaughter charges in fatal crash.
A man is charged with intoxication manslaughter after running a red light and killing another driver in Atascocita early Sunday.
Craig Welch, 23, was traveling westbound in the 7400 block of FM 1960 at about 12:30 a.m. when he ran the red light at the West Lake Houston Parkway intersection, according to the Harris County Sheriff's Office. His 2006 Chevrolet Trailblazer crashed into the driver's side of a Chevrolet Corvette traveling south on the parkway.
The collision killed the Corvette's driver, Omar Jaramillo, and injured his mother, Irene Jaramillo, who was in the front passenger seat. The passenger was transported to an area hospital with survivable injuries.
Three witnesses reported the Trailblazer ignored the red light and hit the Corvette, which had stopped for an earlier red signal and moved once the light changed to green, according to the Sheriff's Office.
Welch was arrested at the scene and found to be intoxicated, authorities said. He is in jail on a $30,000 bail, according to Harris County court records.
The case remains under investigation by the sheriff's Traffic Enforcement Division.
