Alejandro Benito, killed, after he is struck by a car while riding his bicycle on West Mount Houston Street in Harris County.

A bicyclist died Sunday night when a car hit him as he tried to cross a darkened street in north Harris County.

The incident occurred about 9:30 p.m. in the 2600 block of West Mount Houston near Big John, according to the Harris County Sheriff's Office.

Deputies said Alejandro Benito was riding a bicycle as he tried to cross the road, failing to yield the right of way to a 2008 Chevrolet Impala traveling westbound. The road was dark at the time of the crash and the bicycle had no lights.

Benito died at the scene.

Deputies said they are investigating the crash.
