Teen killed in boating accident during Mother's Day outing on Trinity River
A Mother's Day outing on the water turned into a devastating tragedy for one local family.
A family from the Mont Belveiu-Dayton area took an outing on the Trinity River to celebrate Mother's Day. Sheriff Brian Hawthorne says the father was driving the family boat while his wife rode along and watched family members riding on a large tube towed behind the boat.
Upon rounding a bend in the river near the Chambers and Liberty County line, the tube struck a partially submerged tree floating in their path, throwing the passengers into the water. The parents recovered them from the water and noticed their 16-year-old daughter was seriously injured from the collision with the tree. They called Chambers County 911 as they headed to the Trinity River Bridge boat ramp on the west side of I-10.
Chambers County deputies were first to arrive, followed by the Sheriffs Office Marine Unit as well as the Texas Parks and Wildlife. Life Flight was called and transported the 16-year-old daughter to Hermann Memorial Hospital in Houston, where she died.
The remaining family members arrived at the hospital with the victim's 24-year-old brother who was also on the tube. He was rushed into surgery. Following the surgery he was listed as stable. No other injuries have been reported.
