Tractor-trailer plows into Texas interstate bridge, 1 killed

 Authorities say a tractor-trailer has crashed into an overpass under construction along a major interstate in Central Texas, killing one person and halting traffic in both directions.

One person was killed and three others were injured when an 18-wheeler smashed into a highway bridge Thursday morning in Salado, dislodging two beams, which fell onto the highway hitting several vehicles and closing the highway in both directions.

DPS: Truck in Salado crash was 6.5 inches taller than bridge

A DPS spokesperson said the truck and its load were 14 feet, 7 inches tall. On Thursday, the Texas Department of Transportation said the bridge was 14 feet, 1/2 inch tall. TxDOT said three signs near the bridge gave a vertical clearance of 13 feet, 6 inches.

Already state officials with the Department of Motor Vehicles confirmed that the semi driver did not have the proper permits for the over height load.

According to federal records, Lares Trucking underwent five random inspections in the past two years, and officials twice found defects significant enough to pull those trucks out of service.

Wrongful death suit filed in fatal Salado crash

The lawsuit alleges Crowley-based Lares Trucking and the driver, Valentin Martinez, were negligent in hauling a boom lift along I-35. The load was over-height and struck the underside of an overpass under construction at I-35 and FM 2484. 

One person is dead and at least three others are injured after a bridge collapsed along Interstate 35 near mile marker 286 in Salado. An oversized tractor trailer hit a beam of the FM 2484 overpass bridge that was under construction on I-35 causing several beams to fall onto the roadway.
