Brazilian skier Lais Souza seriously injured ahead of Sochi Games.
Doctors say a Brazilian gymnast expected to compete in freestyle skiing at the Sochi Olympics is unable to move, talk or breathe on her own after an accident this week while skiing in Utah.
The Brazilian team doctor said Thursday that 25-year-old Lais Souza is fighting for her life and will definitely miss the Olympics. She was injured Monday when she hit a tree while skiing in Park City.
A University of Utah neurosurgeon stated that she suffered a severe spinal injury and has no feeling in her arms or legs. He says it's still too soon to know whether she'll regain feeling.
"Lais has a long recovery process in front of her," the team doctor said in the statement. "A long-term prognostic cannot be predicted at this time. Her medical team is doing everything possible to allow her to have the best recovery possible."
The Brazilian Olympic Committee said Souza was wearing a helmet when the accident happened as she skied "freely" alongside her Canadian coach at Park City. The committee said she was not injured while practicing her freestyle maneuvers, but no other details on the accident were provided.
Souza was trying to become the first Brazilian to compete in freestyle skiing at a Winter Games. She didn't automatically qualify for Sochi, but was still expected to earn a spot for the event.
Souza participated in the 2004 and 2008 Summer Olympics as a gymnast. She missed the 2012 Olympics because of a hand injury.
