An 18-year-old BYU student remains in critical condition after being hit by a car while riding her longboard skateboard, according to her parents. Lexi Mae Hansen was hit Wednesday evening as she was crossing Canyon Road on her longboard. Lt. Matt Siufanua with the Provo Police Department said Hansen was riding her longboard south on University Avenue just before 6:30 p.m. Wednesday night when she was hit by a car making a turn onto Canyon Road. According to information provided by Utah Valley Regional Medical Center in Provo, Hansen's family said they are grateful for the outpouring of support from the community and welcome the prayers and support of others through the "Pray For Lexi" page on Facebook. According to Siufanua, witnesses said it appeared as if Hansen was trying to beat the car through the intersection and was wearing headphones at the time of the accident. The driver of the car, a male in his 20s, was heading northbound on University Avenue when he made the turn onto Canyon Road and hit the girl. Siufanua said it doesn't appear as if speed, drugs or distraction played any role in the accident and said it is unlikely any charges will be filed against the driver. Siufanua said Hansen suffered serious head injuries and underwent surgery Wednesday night but was still listed in critical condition Thursday. Police don't believe Hansen was wearing a helmet. A Facebook page titled "Pray for Lexi" has been started and has already gathered more than 2,000 likes and hundreds of comments and prayers for the teen. The latest post on the Facebook page was updated around 10 a.m. Thursday morning and said Hansen has significant brain damage and may not survive. The hashtag #PrayforLexiHansen has also become popular on Twitter with family, friends and classmates sharing memories and pictures of Hansen, along with prayers and offers of support for her family. Siufanua said that while this appears to be nothing more than a "really unfortunate accident," pedestrians, bicyclists and skateboarders should be proactive in protecting themselves. "I just think these kids have to pay attention to the surroundings. While it is not the law, if you want to be safe always let those vehicles pass first," he said. "Make sure they are going to stop for you before you get into the crosswalk." Siufanua, however, emphasized that the incident was simply a tragic accident.
