Nathan Hales killed when tractor-trailer crashes into his car at intersection in heavy fog.
One dead in Spanish Fork crash.
A semi-trailer rig allegedly ran a red light in the fog and crashed into a car in Spanish Fork Thursday morning, killing a 48-year-old man.
A Spanish Fork police Lt. said the accident occurred at 8:14 a.m. in the intersection of 2550 East and Highway 6.
Killed in the crash was Nathan Hales, of Spanish Fork. Johnson said the accident would be investigated by the Utah Highway Patrol due to a possible conflict of interest: Hales is the first cousin of the Spanish Fork Public Safety Director.
However, initial investigation indicates the big rig’s 59-year-old Orem driver had a red light when, in thick morning fog, he entered the intersection. The semi, hauling a flat bed trailer loaded with steel, was eastbound on Highway 6; Hales’ car, which had a green light, was making a left turn onto westbound Highway 6.
Johnson said visibility at the accident scene was 100 feet or less when the crash occurred.
No other injuries were reported.
