VDOT Employee Hurt When Pickup Truck Driver Runs Off I-66

A Virginia Department of Transportation worker and a driver were hurt in Northern Virginia Friday afternoon when a pickup truck driver ran off I-66, police say. They were standing outside their cars when the pickup truck driver veered off the road, police said. The VDOT employee had stopped to help the driver of a disabled vehicle. The VDOT employee stopped on I-66 in Fairfax County about 12:30 p.m. to help someone with a disabled vehicle on the shoulder of the road. The pickup truck suffered serious damage in the crash; the front of the car was crushed, a photo of the incident shows.

WASHINGTON — A Virginia Department of Transportation help truck driver who was assisting a stranded motorist was struck by a pickup truck, leaving the VDOT worker and two others seriously injured. As a result, the VDOT truck was pushed into the stranded SUV. The VDOT worker, the SUV driver and the driver of the pickup truck were all injured, police said. A VDOT Safety Services Patrol employee was helping a motorist on westbound Interstate 66, just west of the U.S. 29 exit in Centreville. According to Virginia State Police, the incident happened in Fairfax County, Virginia on Friday afternoon. Police said the VDOT truck had its amber lights flashing when the pickup crashed into it.
