A police officer witnessed a high-speed crash at Northeast Andresen Road and Northeast Fourth Plain Boulevard early this morning. The crash sent three people to the hospital, one with life-threatening injuries. The police officer was traveling east on Fourth Plain, stopped at the Andresen Road intersection for a red light just before 2 a.m. Also at the intersection was a Chevrolet Malibu, stopped in the left turn lane waiting to turn north onto Andresen. The officer then saw an oncoming vehicle, later determined to be a 1997 Dodge Intrepid driven by Ashley Gumbel 28, without headlights traveling at a high rate of speed. The driver of the Malibu did not see the oncoming vehicle, which ran the red light. The two vehicles collided in the intersection causing both vehicles to do several 360 degree turns. The driver and a passenger of the Malibu suffered minor injuries and were taken to an area hospital, but the driver of the Intrepid was seriously injured. “It doesn’t look like she’s going to survive,” police said. It is unknown at this time if drugs or alcohol were involved in the crash.
