A pedestrian died after he was hit by a car in a Puyallup crosswalk Thursday. Officials have identified the man as Christopher Kerns, 42. from Federal Way. It appeared the driver failed to stop at a red light about 7 p.m. on River Road while heading south on North Meridian, hitting an employee of a nearby Ford dealership in the crosswalk. It looked like the Lexus traveled a “considerable distance” down the road with the pedestrian on the hood of the car, jumping up and over a curb, hitting a sign and then four vehicles. Investigators had not yet determined what caused the crash. Police said it was too soon to say whether drugs or alcohol were involved. The driver is a 64-year-old Olympia man. Police arrested the driver on suspicion of vehicular homicide. Engle said they believe he was under the influence of drugs at the time of the collision.
