Elderly driver charged with vehicular assault in wrong-way crash

The trooper said when he spoke with Palas, he was "immediately aware of the strong odor of intoxicants from his person and I observed that I could smell it on his breath as he spoke with me."

Palas pleaded not guilty Wednesday during his arraignment in Superior Court. Judge Garold Johnson ordered him jailed in lieu of $35,000 bail.
