The man who died Saturday in a bicycle-car accident near Woodinville was Jerry Shafer, 65, a well-known competitive cyclist who held several track records in his age group and hardly ever missed a race or even a workout.
Jerry Shafer, a well-known competitive cyclist, was remembered by family and friends on Wednesday at the Marymoor Velodrome in Redmond. Shafer passed away Saturday morning after colliding with a car near Woodinville on 240th Street SE in unincorporated Snohomish County. Shafer died at the scene from injuries he received after he struck an oncoming vehicle during his attempt to pass cyclists ahead of him. Wednesday night cyclists raced in remembrance of Jerry Shafer. They also shared stories about the 65-year-old, who last year raised more than $17,000 to fight a rare kind of eye cancer that his own grandson was fighting.
