One pedestrian dead and two injured when hit by car on N Monroe St in Spokane on Oct 18
City asked to review Monroe Street safety in wake of fatal accident
A deadly accident over the weekend has prompted city officials to review pedestrian safety along a busy stretch of North Monroe Street.
A young girl is dead, her mother remains hospitalized and a boy was hurt after a station wagon driven by a woman hit the family about 6:30 p.m. Friday. Witnesses told police they were were not in a crosswalk. City Councilman Jon Snyder on Monday said he is asking the city’s traffic and engineering staff to look at ways of improving safety on the Monroe corridor from approximately Montgomery to Garland avenues. He said he has no specific ideas for increasing pedestrian safety, but wants the city to study various options. Snyder said Friday’s fatal accident followed another pedestrian fatality in the same section of Monroe two years ago. In 2011, a pedestrian trying to cross Monroe at Montgomery was struck and killed by a police officer who was responding to a call. Police have not released the names of the driver or the pedestrians from Friday’s accident.
