According to Kelley Gillenwater, Communications Director with the WV Department of Environmental Protection (DEP), the truck hit a guardrail, and went off the roadway. Nearly 100 feet of guardrail was taken out.
WV DEP Inspector Reviewing Site Of Tanker Spill In Braxton County
DEP had an inspector on site and also sent an emergency response unit. Based on his observations, the inspector doesn’t believe any of the spilled material reached the stream, the agency said. Booms were put in place just in case and an underflow dam was constructed. This type of dam uses a tube to allow water beneath the surface to flow through the dam while the material floating on top is trapped.
Chemical leak reported following tanker accident along Interstate 79
According to Carrie Bly, spokesperson with the WV Department of Transportation, one southbound lane has been reopened, and that there will be a lane closure throughout the rest of the night and early Friday morning, September 12.
The driver was conscious and talking when found at the scene, and was taken to CAMC General Hospital. The truck contained 4500 of Condensate, which is potentially flammable, and began to leak after the crash. Crews are currently cleaning up the leakage.
