Alan Holder, the chief medical supervisor for the Charleston Fire Department, said the woman was transported to the hospital and emergency personnel there tried to resuscitate her but they were unable to do so.
Described as a middle-age woman, the victim was pulled from the vehicle by the divers after she had been in the water for several hours. Metro 911 said it received a call about a vehicle going off Westmoreland Road into the river about noon Wednesday.

Peggy Ann Jarrett, 80, of Charleston died after divers pulled her from her vehicle that ran off Westmoreland Road about noon Wednesday, according to a news release from the Charleston Fire Department.
