The sheriff's department got a call about 6:30 a.m. Wednesday from a citizen in Freedom who saw a person pinned in the mechanism in the back of the recycling truck.

Outagamie County authorities say the man was collecting recycling in the town of Freedom Wednesday morning. A person out walking saw the truck with its driver’s side door open. The person looked in the truck and saw the man in distress.

Garbage truck operator killed in Outagamie County

A garbage truck operator was fatally injured Wednesday morning when he was pinned in the truck in Outagamie County, the sheriff's office said.
Outagamie County authorities report that one person has died in a recycling truck accident. Sheriff's deputies are investigating. Somehow the man became pinned in the truck, which is owned by Harter’s Fox Valley Disposal in Wittenberg. (Update) Upon further investigation, authorities believe Griepentrog died of traumatic asphyxia from being pinned in the truck.
