2 dead in crash in downtown Racine(link is external)

Two people are dead and a driver in custody after two vehicles collided in downtown Racine. All three were taken to a Racine hospital, where two of them died. Police say one vehicle was traveling north when it was struck by another vehicle traveling south. The Racine Police Department says the crash was reported on Main Street just after 1:30 a.m. The driver of the southbound vehicle ran away and was apprehended by a security officer from Metro Security and Public Safety.

The people killed in a hit-and-run crash in Racine early Sunday morning have been identified. Police said Raymond Schweissinger, 57, and James Peterson, 31, died when their car was hit by another vehicle near Second and Main streets in Racine. The driver of the car who hit them tried to run away but was arrested a short time later. The cause of the crash is under investigation. Police are asking anyone who may have seen the crash to call them at 262-635-7816.

A Racine man has been charged in a downtown crash that left two men dead. Ramone Campbell, 30, was charged Tuesday with two counts of reckless homicide and other counts including hit-and run and reckless driving. Prosecutors say Campbell was speeding and drunk when he crashed into a car Sunday, killing 57-year-old Ray Schweissinger and 31-year-old James Peterson, both of Racine. The complaint says Campbell told police he ran away after the crash because he knew there was a child support warrant for him, and he was on a probation hold. Bond was set at $500,000.
