Lack of seat belt use cited in fatal crash west of Newcastle

Road conditions (black ice), use of cruise control on poor road conditions and lack of seat belt use are all being investigated as contributing factors in this crash.

A fatal crash Wednesday morning (2/17/16) west of Newcastle, Wyoming has resulted in the death of 60 year old Newcastle resident Gilbert R. Maestas. The crash occurred at 6:20 a.m. near mile post 32 on Wyoming State Highway 450 approximately 32 miles west of Newcastle. Maestas was a rear seat passenger in a 2000 Suzuki Vitara SUV that was driven by Allen Holland, 49, also from Newcastle. Two other passengers were also in the SUV at the time of the crash. The Suzuki was traveling westbound on a slight uphill left hand curve in the highway when the SUV lost traction on an ice covered section of the road. The vehicle began to fishtail and eventually left the highway into the ditch. After entering the ditch, the Suzuki spun, tripped and rolled. Maestas was not wearing his seat belt at the time of the crash and remained in the cab of the SUV during the rollover. Maestas was taken by ground ambulance to Weston County Hospital in Newcastle where he succumbed to his injuries. Holland, who was buckled in, and the other two occupants of the SUV were transported by ground ambulance to Weston County Hospital for their injuries. The other two passengers were identified as Mark Gladue, 32, whose seat belt was in use, and Sandra Duclo, 56, whose seat belt was not in use. Both Gladue and Duclo are also from Newcastle.
