It was just after midnight when a 26-year-old man who was driving on State Route 101 started to fall asleep, and he careened into an embankment. He, along with a 30-year-old woman and four children under the age of 10, were all injured and taken to the hospital. None of them were wearing seat belts, though an 8-month-old boy who was restrained in a car seat was not hurt.

Frankie Lemance was driving a green Ford pickup east on U.S. 64 near Lock and Dam Road in Ozark with his three children in the vehicle. Lemance appeared to have fallen asleep at the wheel and crossed the center line, colliding head-on with a black Dodge pickup driven by John Gwatney. Lemance’s 8-year-old son and 9-year-old daughter were taken to Arkansas Children’s Hospital in Little Rock in critical condition. Lemance’s 11-year-old son was not hurt. Lemance and Gwatney were in stable condition when brought to Mercy Fort Smith.
