Landon M. Staley, 16, Travin K. Nelson-Phongphiou, 16, and Mikayla Sorenson, 15, dead, 15-year-old girl injured after van drives under parked semi trailer on Alderwood Mall Parkway in Lynnwood, Washington
Police said there were no witnesses to the crash that happened at about 3:30 a.m. Wednesday.
Video from the scene shows fire crews lifting the semi trailer off of the van.
A preliminary investigation found that the car was traveling north on Alderwood Mall Parkway when it crashed into a semi tractor-trailer that was parked on the side of the road.
The car hit the semi with such force that it became wedged beneath the trailer with its top crumpled and sheared off.
Shari Ireton, a spokesperson for the Snohomish County Sheriff's Department, initially said the semi-trailer was parked legally alongside the road. The area where the crash occurred is a stretch of road where drivers regularly park their trucks and tractor-trailers and either leave them unattended or sleep in them. Later in the day, she said, "However, the trailer was not parked in the correct direction, as the front of the trailer was facing the direction by oncoming traffic. This is a civil parking infraction."
The three people killed after their SUV slid under a parked semi early Wednesday morning were all high school students in the Everett School District, according to reports. All three who died attended Henry M. Jackson High School in Everett. A fourth person, a 15-year-old girl, survived the crash and is a student at Cascade High School in Everett.
Travin is remembered as a class clown, the baby brother of three sisters. He was planning to spend the following night with his grandparents, but that night never came.
Landon, who got his driver's license only two months ago, sneaked out of his family's apartment on the night of the crash to drive around with some friends, his mother said.
