Man killed in 3-car crash on Route 287 in Bernards Twp., State Police say
A man was killed in a three-car crash on Route 287 early Sunday morning, State Police said.
The crash occurred at about 2:04 a.m. near mile-marker 27.6 on Route 287 when a 2012 BMW driven by Calvin Luk, 25, of Mendham ran off the road to the left and struck a guardrail, State Police spokesman Trooper Jeff Flynn said.
Luk's BMW rotated across the highway and struck the guardrail on the right side before coming to a rest in the center and right lanes, Flynn said. Luk's vehicle was reported as driving erratically prior to the crash, he said.
The second car — a 2007 Mercedes-Benz operated by Salvatore Sarrecchia, 47, of Sparta — was unable to avoid the BMW and crashed into the car, Flynn said. Sarrecchia's car came to a rest in the center and left lanes, he said.
After the second crash, a third vehicle — a 2002 Chevy Tahoe driven by Lawrence Lynn — was driving in the left lane and unable to avoid the crashed vehicles, Flynn said. Lynn is a Human Services police officer, he said.
Sarrecchia was reported as being outside of his vehicle as a pedestrian when the Tahoe crashed into both Sarrecchia and the Mercedes, Flynn said.
Sarrecchia was pronounced dead at the scene, Flynn said.
Luk, Lynn and Sarrecchia's wife, Nicole, who was in his vehicle at the time of the crash, were taken to Morristown Medical Center for minors injuries, he said.
The crash is still under investigation, but criminal charges are pending against Luk, Flynn said.
