Child ejected, 5 others injured in rollover accident on I-84 in NE Oregon.
Six people were injured, including a child who was ejected, in a rollover accident on Interstate 84 west of Meacham in northeast Oregon late Thursday.
Oregon State Police said that about 11:30 p.m., Beatriz Murillo, 38 of Salem, lost control of her 2003 Chevrolet Suburban on black ice while headed east on I-84. The vehicle rolled several times crossing through the median before coming to rest on the westbound shoulder.
A 5-year-old boy in the vehicle, who was not properly restrained, was ejected. Suffering serious injuries, the boy was transported initially by air ambulance to St. Anthony Hospital in Pendleton then was flown to Oregon Health & Science University in Portland.
The other five family members in the vehicle, including Murillo and Lucio Mendoza, 44, were transported by ground ambulance to St. Anthony Hospital with non-life threatening injuries. No other identities were released.
OSP, which is investigating, said the accident is a reminder of the importance of using proper restraints. A driver or passenger who is not wearing a seat belt or who is not restrained is five times more likely to be ejected than one who is belted. The odds of surviving after being ejected are one in four.
