Sharonda Sims, 28, Justin Sims, 31, Savion Sims, 5, killed, Ariel Sims, 7, Kitty Sims, 2, critically injured, airlifted to hospital, after their car is struck by a tractor-trailer driven by Antonio Garcia, 31, at an intersection in Polk City.

Two adults and their 5-year-old child are dead, and their three other children were taken to hospitals after a major accident in Polk City early Tuesday morning, according to Polk County Sheriff's Office.

According to PCSO, a semi tractor trailer driven by 31-year-old Antonio Garcia of Tampa was going north on State Road 33 (Commonwealth Avenue) when it collided with a 1998 Buick Century going west on Deen Still Road. Deputies said the car might have failed to stop at the stop sign at the intersection.

The car, carrying a family of six from Dade City, hit the trailer and was dragged about 400 feet down the road, according to the PCSO report.

The two parents, 31-year-old Justin Sims and his wife 28-year-old Sharonda Sims, and their son who was in the front seat, 5-year-old Savion Sims, were all killed in the crash.

Two other children in the back seat, 7-year-old Ariel Sims and 2-year-old Kitty Sims, were airlifted to a hospital in critical condition.

A baby who was also in the back seat, 3-month-old Arienne Sims, was taken to a hospital with non-life threatening injuries.

None of the children, nor the parents, were wearing a seatbelt, the PCSO says.

The baby was properly restrained in her carseat in the back seat of the car.

The driver of the semi was wearing a seatbelt and was not hurt.

The investigation indicates that the family was shopping at an outlet mall in Orlando and returning home to Dade City when the crash occurred.

Deputies found that the driver of the Buick, Sims, had a suspended driver's license from September 2013, for failure to pay traffic fines.

Officials closed SR 33 at Green Pond for a few hours. The roadway was open at 6 a.m. Deputies are working to notify the family's out-of-state relatives before releasing the victims' names to public.

The investigation is ongoing. No charges are pending.
