Motorist trying to evade traffic stop killed in Birmingham crash

A man apparently trying to evade a traffic stop was killed when he collided with a work truck at a downtown Birmingham intersection. The crash happened just after 10:30 a.m. at the intersection of 27th Street and Fourth Avenue South. Witnesses said the red SUV was traveling northbound on 27th Street when he was struck by oncoming giant tire service truck. Authorities said the driver of the red SUV was spotted by a South Precinct police officer driving erratically near the Veteran's Administration Hospital. The officer was attempting to stop the SUV when the crash happened.

Police say the driver refused to stop, ran some red lights and then collided with a large truck on 4th Avenue and 27th Street. No word on why the driver refused to stop for police. An officer noticed a man in a red SUV driving erratically around Clairmont Avenue and tried to pull him over. The driver of the large work truck was not hurt. Birmingham police are investigating a fatal accident that happened around 10:30 a.m. on Thursday morning.

Police said the driver refused to stop, ran some red lights and then collided with a large truck on 4th Avenue and 27th Street at 10:37 a.m.  Police said there was never a pursuit.
