Alcohol is believed to be a factor in a deadly head-on crash on the Beeline Highway in the East Valley on Thursday night, an Arizona Department of Public Safety Officer said. The collision happened about 10:10 p.m. when a Ford Mustang appeared to have crossed the center line and hitting an SUV head-on, DPS Officer Eric Lamb said. Lamb said an older man who was a passenger in the Mustang was killed. The passenger and the woman driving the northbound Mustang had to be extricated, Lamb said. There was no condition available on the woman. The man driving the SUV was not badly injured and took himself to a nearby hospital to be checked. The crash shutdown the northbound lanes of U.S. Highway 87 at the Salt River Bridge between Mesa and Fountain Hills, Lamb said. Lamb said the air bags deployed in the Mustang and officers were trying to determine whether the man and woman were wearing seatbelts. Lamb said alcohol appeared to have been a factor in the crash, and the investigation was continuing. The identity of the car's passenger was not immediately available. No other information was immediately available.
