Fatal car crash interrupts light rail service in Tempe

TEMPE, Ariz. (AP) - Authorities say one man is dead after a vehicle lost control and crashed into a pole on a light rail track in Tempe. Copyright 2015 The Associated Press. Tempe police say the driver of a Ford Mustang was apparently speeding when crossing the tracks Friday morning. Valley Metro shut down all of their trains in Tempe and Mesa on Friday morning because of the crash. Police say he was extricated from the vehicle and taken to a hospital, where he is in critical condition.

Fatal crash shuts down light rail in east Valley

Valley Metro said the accident shut down light rail trains serving the two east Valley communities just after 5:30 a.m. Light rail passengers should look for and board buses running along the rail line until the accident scene is cleared. An occupant of a car was briefly trapped after the vehicle slammed into a light pole at the Priest Drive and Washington Street intersection, Tempe police Sgt. Johnson said it appeared that the vehicle had made a sudden lane change when the driver lost control and crashed. A passenger was killed and the driver of a vehicle that slammed into a lightt pole was in critical condition after an early-morning accident in Tempe.
