The driver of a golf cart was hit and killed by an apparent red light runner at a Youngtown intersection Saturday night, Maricopa County sheriff's deputies said. The suspect, 26-year-old Eric Aldava, initially fled the scene but returned later with family members. Deputies said he told them he was the driver of the vehicle and he ran because he panicked. The crash occurred at 10:18 p.m. at 111th and Peoria avenues in Youngtown. The driver of the golf cart was traveling eastbound on Peoria preparing to turn left to northbound 111th Avenue when Aldava allegedly ran a red light and struck the cart, MCSO said. After Aldava disappeared, MCSO K-9 units set up a perimeter and searched for the suspect. Just after midnight, Aldava returned and was arrested. "An evaluation was conducted and the suspect was believed to be under the influence of alcohol at the time of the collision," said a MCSO spokesman. Maricopa County Vehicular Crimes assumed the investigation. Aldava was booked into jail for leaving the scene of a fatal accident.
