A 90-year-old woman who was a passenger in a car that was struck by a truck in midtown last month died Tuesday. Dorothy Hill died of complications from her injuries in the March 13 crash that occurred shortly before 11:30 a.m. at East Speedway and North Catalina Avenue, just east of North Columbus Boulevard, said Sgt. Chris Widmer, a Tucson Police Department spokesman. A 60-year-old man was driving the 1983 Chevrolet truck north on Catalina, and failed to yield from the stop sign at Speedway, causing the crash with a 2008 Chrysler PT Cruiser that was traveling west on Speedway, Widmer said. The driver of the truck was taken to a hospital with non-life threatening injuries, and his passenger — a 55-year-old man — suffered minor injuries and was not hospitalized, Widmer said. Hill and the driver of the Cruiser, a 72-year-old woman, were taken to a hospital for their injuries, said Widmer. During the initial investigation, officers said that the driver of the truck showed signs and symptoms of intoxication. A DUI investigation was completed, but the driver of the truck was not arrested that day because of his injuries, said Widmer. He said felony charges are pending. Since January there have been 13 fatalities in the city, compared to 14 for the same time last year, police records show.
