Former Butte sheriff's pilot injured in chopper crash near Willows

Chaplin, a veteran pilot, was flying for PJ Helicopters out of Red Bluff, on a contract with PG&E, Jones said. He was about to pick up PG&E workers at the time of the crash.
Ron Chaplin, 67, of Willows, was flying a Hughes D500 helicopter when the craft crashed in an almond orchard west of Glenn County Road D. Chaplin was taken by helicopter to Enloe Medical Center in Chico where he was in fair condition with moderate injuries. Jones said Chaplin told someone he heard an abnormal noise prior to the helicopter going down, but the sheriff was not aware if he had radioed to report any issues.
