74-year-old man dies in crosswalk when struck by elderly driver who mistook gas for brake on McBean Parkway in Valencia, California

Driver Hits Gas Instead of Brake, Runs Over Senior

An elderly driver stepped on the gas pedal instead of the brake and ran over a 74-year-old man in a Valencia crosswalk Monday, sheriff’s deputies said. The car, which was moving about 5 mph, pinned the victim underneath in the 25800 block of McBean Parkway about 9:13 a.m., according to the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department. The man was freed and airlifted to Henry Mayo Newhall Memorial Hospital, where deputies say he was pronounced dead about an hour after the crash. Sheriff’s officials said the female driver was not detained and an investigation was underway.
