Teen Killed In Suspected Distracted Driving Accident Remembered As Leader.

Friends of a teen killed by an alleged distracted driver spent the day washing cars to raise money for his family.

A distracted driver was arrested in Manteca early Saturday, after she ran into a group of teens walking along a road, killing one and injuring three.

Mia Sara Aguiar, 19, of Stockton was being held on a misdemeanor vehicular manslaughter charge at the San Joaquin County Jail Sunday. Her bond was set at $100,000.

Killed was Zachariah Gomez, 14, of Manteca, who was identified by the San Joaquin County Sheriff’s Office Sunday. He was pronounced dead at Doctors Hospital in Modesto Saturday.

The accident happened shortly before 1:15 a.m. Saturday. Four teenagers, including Gomez, were walking west, on the north shoulder of Yosemite Road, west of Comconex Road.

Aguiar, who was driving a 1995 Saturn, was going west on Yosemite. As she approached the area where the teens were walking, Aguiar looked away from the roadway to look for her cell phone, and her car drifted off into the right, hitting the pedestrians, authorities said.

Gomez and a 16-year-old Manteca boy were taken to Doctors Hospital in Manteca. Gomez was later transported to Doctors Hospital in Modesto, where he succumbed to his injuries. The condition of the 16-year-old was not known Sunday.

A 15-year old Manteca boy and a 16-year-old Stockton girl were taken to San Joaquin County General Hospital. Their conditions were not known Sunday.

Alcohol and drugs were not believed to be factors in the accident. It was unknown how fast Aguiar was going at the time of the accident.
