1 dead, 19 injured in bus crash near Bonsall.
One person died, six were seriously injured and 13 others suffered minor injuries when a casino-bound charter bus overturned on south Interstate 15 just south of state Route 76 near Bonsall Thursday afternoon, authorities said. This is the second casino tour bus crash today in California.
The 56-year-old driver, from Compton, said the crash occurred about 2:30 p.m. after the bus started to fishtail, said a CHP Officer. The driver tried to correct, and the bus spun around and fell on its side.
Officers and emergency personnel arrived to find a "quite a chaotic" scene.
The passenger who was fatally injured remained trapped under the bus as of 4:15 p.m. The others injured were taken to Tri-City Medical Center in Oceanside, Palomar Medical Center in Escondido and Fallbrook Hospital.
The crash initially closed two right lanes of south I-15, said CHP Officer Robert Catano. As of 5 p.m., only one lane remained shut down.
CHP said the road was wet, but could not yet say if road conditions or speed contributed to the crash. The driver said he was traveling about 55 mph in the far-right lane at the time. It had been raining heavily in the area, CHP said.
Twenty-one passengers were on the Five Star Charter Company bus that was headed to Valley View Casino from Panorama City in Los Angeles. The bus company is based in Bell.
Emergency crews were staged on the transition from east Route 76 to south I-15, which was also closed.
