A pickup driver was killed early Thursday when a trash truck broadsided the 2002 Ford F150 he was driving just north of Escondido.

The crash was reported at 6:12 a.m. at Ivy Dell Lane and Centre City Parkway, east of Interstate 15.

According to police, the driver of the trash truck, who had just started his shift, was headed northbound on Centre City Parkway when a 2002 Ford F-150 pulled out directly into his path. The driver of the trash truck told police he was unable to avoid a collision.

The driver of the Ford F-150, a 56-year-old Escondido man, was killed instantly. The driver of the trash truck ended up trapped in the vehicle but was not hurt.

The cause of the crash is under investigation. Police have not yet determined whether drugs or alcohol played a role in what happened.

Centre City Parkway was closed for several hours following the crash.
