A parolee wanted for a traffic offense led law enforcement on a car chase Sunday through La Mesa and El Cajon until his vehicle crashed into two others, and he tried to run off with a female passenger, police said.
A La Mesa police tried to pull over Sean Bartelson, 34, whom they recognized as a known subject on parole, shortly after 8 a.m. for an unspecified traffic violation at El Cajon Boulevard and Baltimore Drive, said a La Mesa police Lt. in a statement.
Officers pursued the suspect vehicle east onto Interstate 8 into El Cajon, then north on state Route 67. Bartelson's car crashed into two others as its driver attempted to leave the freeway via the Bradley Avenue off-ramp at a high rate of speed.
DeSarro said both Bartelson and passenger Chelsea Hill, 21, then ran from the wreckage. But, both were apprehended as they were trying to flee, according to the lieutenant.
San Diego County sheriff's deputies and California Highway Patrol officers, who had joined in the chase, also assisted in the arrests.
Bartelson was arrested then taken to Sharp Memorial Hospital to be checked out after complaining of neck pain, police said. One person in the other cars was also taken to a hospital for an evaluation.
No law enforcement officers were injured.
Police said Bartelson would be booked into the San Diego Central Jail on suspicion of felony evading following his release from the hospital. Hill was arrested on suspicion of resisting or delaying a peace officer in their duties, police said.
