A multi-vehicle crash on southbound Interstate 15 near University Avenue Monday evening led to the closure of several lanes.

Three people were injured Monday night in a four-vehicle collision on southbound state Route 15 near University Avenue in City Heights, authorities said.

All were transported to hospitals, a San Diego Fire-Rescue Department dispatcher said. At least one person had to be extricated.

The collision was reported about 5:40 p.m. Four vehicles were initially blocking the right shoulder and two right lanes, the California Highway Patrol said on its website.

A traffic alert was issued for the freeway as authorities responded and investigated. Three southbound lanes were shut, along with the southbound off-ramp to University Avenue.

Tow trucks were removing the damaged vehicles.
