Caltrans subcontractor fatally struck by driver charged with DUI on I-580 in Oakland

One man is dead and another charged with DUI after an accident on I-580 in Oakland. It happened just after midnight Saturday in the westbound lanes, near the Lakeshore off ramp.The California Highway Patrol says a driver caromed off a wall into a coned off construction zone, where Caltrans crews were repaving the roadway.A subcontractor working for Caltrans was struck. He was thrown approximately 100 feet and died at the scene.The driver of the car was not injured.

Oakland: Worker on I-580 killed in apparent DUI crash

OAKLAND -- A 33-year-old road worker was killed early Saturday and one person was arrested in an apparent DUI crash on Interstate 580 near Lake Merritt, the California Highway Patrol said. The driver of a silver Honda Accord suspected of DUI was arrested after the crash, Anderson said. The crash happened at about 12:17 a.m. on west I-580 before the Lakeshore Avenue exit, Officer Eric Anderson said. The Alameda County Coroner's Office identified the deceased worker as Miguel Rodriguez Delacruz, of Oakland. Delacruz was a contractor working for Caltrans, which has been repairing portions of the freeway in recent months.
