Nurse struck, killed by car outside Oakland hospital : State

Police have identified a pedestrian who was struck by a car outside an Oakland hospital as a nurse who had worked more than 30 years working at the institution. Alvarez was struck by a car outside UCSF Benioff Children's Hospital in Oakland on Wednesday while working the overnight shift. Officials say Alvarez was in the crosswalk walking to the hospital from the parking garage when she was struck. The San Francisco Chronicle reports  that 66-year-old Patricia Alvarez, of El Sobrante, died Sunday after her family decided to take her off life support.

The 66-year-old El Sobrante resident died Sunday at Highland Hospital after she was hit by a suspected drunken driver on Nov. 25. Outside Children's Hospital Wednesday, nurses and other friends and family formed a circle around the parking lot's flagpoles. Patricia "Patty" Alvarez, who worked at the North Oakland hospital since 1979, was remembered as a dedicated nurse with an "incredible legacy at this hospital," Rev. OAKLAND -- About 100 people, many of them nurses, gathered Wednesday night outside UCSF Benioff Children's Hospital Oakland to hold vigil for a highly respected nurse who died after she was hit by a suspected drunken driver. A Tibetan Singing Bowl was played as nurses raised their hospital badges and stethoscopes in a sign of solidarity with their departed friend.
