Simmons could be heard talking to a dispatcher and Lt. Kevin Johns after authorities said she hit him with her car. "He's breathing. Can you hear me, sir? Sir, can you hear me? He's breathing, but I need somebody here. Please hurry," Simmons said during the call.
Funeral Services for Firefighter to Be Held Next Week
Funeral services for a firefighter who was hit by a car while changing a tire are scheduled for next week.
Lorenza Simmons told dispatchers she was trying to avoid hitting the SUV in front of her when she swerved off the road and hit Kevin Johns, who was rushed to Delray Medical Center and was pronounced dead at 1:09 p.m. Johns served the city of Fort Lauderdale for 29 years. Visitation is set for Monday from 5-8 p.m. at the Sanctuary Church in Fort Lauderdale at 1400 North Federal Highway. His funeral will be held at the same location Tuesday at 10 a.m.
