Marlin Moudy, 70 slightly injured, taken to hospital, after his twin-engine aircraft crashes on approach to Witham Field in Stuart.
Man, 70, injured when plane crashes near Witham Field in Stuart.
A 70-year-old man piloting a twin-engine Cessna was injured Friday evening when his plane crashed near Witham Field in Stuart, authorities said.
The crash happened around 5:30 p.m. in a grassy area along the 1000 block of Southeast Federal Highway near Southeast Tressler Avenue, said Officer Brian Bossio, city police spokesman.
Police identified the pilot late Friday as Marlin Moudy, a native of Wyoming.
Moudy was trying to land at Witham Field, which lies just southeast of the crash site. He avoided hitting several homes as his plane was crashing, authorities said.
Preliminary information indicates that the Cessna 402 aircraft apparently crashed on its approach to Runway 12 at the airport, Federal Aviation Administration spokeswoman Kathleen Bergen said.
Moudy sustained a minor head injury in the crash, Bossio said. He was conscious when paramedics arrived, and he was taken to Martin Memorial North Hospital. He was the only person on board.
FAA records show the Cessna, which was manufactured in 1974, is owned by Mardon Inc., a company based in Wilmington, Del.
The FAA and the National Transportation Safety Board are investigating the crash.
