Boy, 5, dies after being struck by vehicle in Palatine, police say
The boy, who lived near the scene of the incident, was autistic, family members told police.
The 5-year-old was seen walking alone across Palatine Road at 4:15 p.m. when he was struck by a car east of Winston Drive. The car, a gray 2006 Hyundai Sonata, was driven by a 53-year-old Bartlett man. Initial reports say the boy walked into the path of the vehicle as the driver was turning left from southbound Winston onto eastbound Palatine Road. The boy was taken to Northwest Community Hospital and later flown to Lurie Children's Hospital in Chicago, where he was pronounced dead at 1:26 a.m. Tuesday.
