Crashes shut down I-70 in Greenfield
A number of accidents were reported on Thursday morning because of slick conditions on interstates.
Multiple crashes prompted authorities to shut down Interstate 70 in both directions in the Greenfield area.
According to the Boone County Sheriff's Office, Interstate 65 in Boone County, northbound and southbound, Interstate 865 and southbound Interstate 465 were snow covered, slick and hazardous.
Around 9:20 a.m., INDOT had five active crashes in the surrounding Indianapolis area.
Liberty Township fire officials said there were multiple crashes on Interstate 70 between the 55-mile marker and 61-mile marker, which is in Hendricks County. That was around 10:15 a.m.
"The roads are extremely slick as the snow continues to fall in Hendricks County," said Matthew Petro, public information officer for the Fire Department of Liberty Township.
I-70 westbound was also blocked at the 119-mile marker, east of the Knightstown exit, due to an overturned semi crash involving injuries. Motorists were asked to avoid the area. At that crash scene, I-70 westbound was being detoured off the interstate at the New Castle exit onto State Road 3, south to U.S. 40.
Police reported a number of crashes in the traffic back up and in the area of the 118-119 mile markers, but no injuries were reported in those crashes.
Around 1 p.m. both lanes of northbound Interstate 65 were closed at the 22 mile marker near Henryville because of a rolled over semi tractor and trailer. Traffic was being diverted at exit 19, Henryville.
