The fatal accident happened around 9 p.m. at 91st Street & Washington Boulevard when a vehicle hit a tree, according to police. The driver died at the scene. Police said there was a passenger in the car, but couldn't confirm that person's condition. Police believe speed may have caused the accident.

"The victim likely did not see the approaching stop sign and likely locked up the vehicle's brakes in a frantic attempt to stop," said a statement from IMPD. "It is believed that the victim lost control of the vehicle and the vehicle began to slide into a tree. Investigators have determined that speed was a contributing factor to this unfortunate and tragic crash."
