A wrong-way accident on the Highway 65 bypass claimed the life of one person and injured another Thursday morning.
The accident happened around 8:45 a.m. near the Vandalia Road interchange in Pleasant Hill. Officials say 20-year-old Austin Ruppert of Carlisle driving southbound in the northbound lane when he realized the mistake and tried to get into the correct lane.
While trying to maneuver the car it was T-boned by a vehicle heading northbound.
Because of construction in the area the normal southbound lanes are closed and traffic is diverted to the northbound lanes, which are split to allow head-to-head traffic.
Ruppert was pronounced dead at the scene.
The driver of the other car, 48-year-old Som Lo of Des Moines, was transported to Mercy Hospital by air ambulance. Lo’s condition is listed as fair.
