Police responded to Whitney Avenue at Michigan Street after a report of a 13-year-old who was hit while riding his bicycle.

Police say the minivan was heading north on Whitney Avenue when the teen rode out into the street. The boy said he did not look both ways before crossing the street. Police say the driver tried to stop, but couldn't in time.

Police say the child is responsive, but suffered a broken leg, broken arm, and some scratches and bumps on the head.

"He's already been taken by ambulance but cars are always flying up and down this street at a very ridiculous rate," says Churetah Meaux, the victim's cousin.

Police say the incident appears to be an accident, but neighbors say this street needs something to keep the traffic from going faster than the 25 mph posted speed limit.

At this point no charges have been filed.
