Two Kirtland residents were killed and their baby daughter was injured in a head-on car crash Friday morning on U.S. 64.

San Juan County sheriff’s deputies are investigating a crash in northwestern New Mexico that killed two people and injured two others, including an infant.

San Juan County deputies responded to a traffic accident that occurred at about 6 a.m. Friday.
San Juan County deputies responded to a traffic accident that occurred at about 6 a.m. Friday. Authorities said a white pickup truck was traveling eastbound on U.S. 64 when it crossed the median and struck a black SUV traveling westbound. The driver of the pickup, a 40-year-old man, suffered non-life-threatening injuries and was transported to San Juan Regional Center. The SUV had three occupants in it at the time of the accident. Authorities said the driver of the SUV, a 37 year-old man, was pronounced dead at the scene. A 20-year-old female passenger was also pronounced dead at the scene. A 5-month-old infant who was also in the SUV was flown to Albuquerque. The infant is listed in critical but stable condition. The cause of the accident is still being investigated. Preliminary reports indicate that alcohol does not appear to have been a factor in the accident. UPDATE: The victims in this accident have been identified as Shiinayaw Howe, injured, Brianna Begay, and Galvin Howe, deceased. The driver of the other vehicle has been identified as Tommy Fasthorse. 12/08/13.
