6 people injured, 2 transported to hospital, after a N.Y.C. bus driver suffers a stroke, in the Greenpoint section of Brooklyn, and crashes into several cars on Nassau Ave.
Bus driver suffers stroke — Bus crashes into parked cars.
A city bus driver damaged nearly two dozen vehicles in Brooklyn after suffering an apparent stroke behind the wheel, officials and transit sources said Friday.
The B48 bus was rolling along Nassau Ave. in Greenpoint at about 7:15 p.m. when the driver veered into a row of parked cars between Monitor and Sutton Sts., officials said.
Many of the vehicles were sideswiped, witnesses said. Others suffered front and rear-end damage as cars were slammed into the autos in front of them -- a chain reaction that sent witnesses running outside.
"It sounded exactly like a big bang … as if the plow trucks were dropping their plows down," said resident Thomas Milligan. "Then I look out and all these cars got swiped out."
Six people - including the bus driver and five victims from the parked autos - suffered injuries, officials said.
Paramedics rushed the bus driver and a motorist in one of the damaged cars to Woodhull Hospital with non-life threatening injuries, according to authorities. The rest were treated at the scene.
The bus driver was found passed out behind the wheel and appeared to be in bad shape, witnesses said
"This guy started kicking open the bus door and got everyone off," said Henry Toncic, co-owner of Vinnie's Pizza on Nassau St.
"Everyone seemed fine, but the bus driver was passed out to the side. It was terrible and nerve-wracking."
Two passengers on the bus suffered minor injuries but refused medical attention, according to a Metropolitan Transportation Authority spokesman.
The cause of the accident was under investigation Friday night.
