U.S. 50 was closed in Stonelick Township after a fatal crash early Friday.
ODOT confirmed two people were killed in a crash east of the intersection with Ohio 222 just before 7 a.m. while a truck was going east toward Owensville.
“Apparently at some point, the trailer from the semi had broken free from the power unit and slid left of center and ended up striking two separate vehicles,” a spokesman said.
At least four vehicles struck the trailer or each other.
The drivers of two vehicles were killed, police said. One other driver suffered minor injuries. No names have been released.
Price said that while he couldn't say the truck was at fault at this point, there weren't many other factors that could have caused the crash.
"It's not wet. There's no runoffs, there's no ice, there's no snow, so the roads are in pretty good shape," police said. "I have my reconstruction team on scene and we're working through the investigation at this point."
The road was closed for several hours.
