Philip Smith, 33, killed and 2 men critically injured in single-vehicle crash on I-75 South in Troy, Ohio

A Sidney man who told a Miami County judge he has nightmares about a March 9, 2015 crash in which his friend from Troy was killed, was sentenced Monday, Feb. 8, to six years in prison. Eric Pellman, 41, pleaded no contest and was found guilty in December in Common Pleas Court of aggravated vehicular assault and operating a vehicle while under the influence in the crash on Interstate 75 between Troy and Tipp City. Philip Smith II, 33, of Troy was killed. “I would like to apologize for what happened,” Pellman said, adding he and Smith were close friends and he has nightmares reliving the crash. “I know that is not going to bring Philip back.” Smith’s mother told Pellman she forgives him, prays for him and wants him to take advantage of prison rehabilitation programs so can “come out of there a new man.” Judge Christopher Gee said Pellman had a history of drug-related convictions and was arrested for drug-related charges in Shelby County 10 days after Smith’s death. State troopers said Pellman was southbound when his vehicle made a dramatic lane change, overturned and landed on a guardrail. The indictment against Pellman alleged he had cocaine in his system at the time of the wreck.
